Ski and Skiing - A Brief Overview

People around the globe enjoy skiing. The cold-weather activity is fast becoming one of the most popular vacation themes and with ski resorts located world-wide, it's not difficult to take up the sport.

Getting Up to Speed

Skiing has its origins in several different cultures. Many developed ski-like mechanisms that resemble what we refer to today as "skis." One was the snowshoe which could be covered by various materials, such as fur. One version had moccasins attached to the top so all that was required of the "skier" was to slip their feet in and off they'd go.

Obviously, the design of skis has come a long way since then and there are numerous brands with sizes and styles for everyone regardless of experience. Some skis still have a wooden core, normally made of either spruce or fir. Some skis have a combination of both woods. This middle core is usually surrounded by a high-performance material; something smooth and durable that will enable the skier to glide down the hill almost effortlessly. Two commonly used materials are glass and titanium. Ultimately, a person gets a good "feel" for skiing and the equipment they are most comfortable with, so they simply choose what suits them best. It's not uncommon for a very experienced skier to have his or her equipment custom made.

Some newer types of skis are being made with a bit of a different shape than established models. They are designed to be a bit longer and curved instead of being perfectly straight. The curves are meant to make the experience more enjoyable and put less stress on the legs.

Skis PLUS

Skis certainly aren't the only pieces of equipment to consider when you want to hit the slopes. Ski poles are essential for the novice skier, as they provide assistance in keeping your balance while you are learning the basics. Many veterans forego the use of skiing "training wheels", while others never ski without them.

Helmets may not look terribly fashionable or comfortable, but they are generally advised if you are just learning how to ski. They offer protection for your head in case you take a tumble, and if skiing is a new experience for you, there will be some tumbling. Helmets are also recommended for children, beginners or not. Children can have serious accidents while skiing, so knowing that your child is protected is very reassuring.

Boots and bindings are usually greatly dependent on personal preference. There are many styles and designs available and a good fit is the most important feature to look for. A better fit equals better control.
